There was confusion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday when two personnel of the Nigerian Air Force beat an official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to coma.
It was learnt that the two Air Force men, who were on duty controlling traffic at the departure section, beat the FAAN staff for allegedly committing a traffic offence.
The FAAN official, identified as Mohammed Shuaibu, works with the protocol and passage section of the agency.
Shuaibu had told his friend to pick him with a car at the airport. His friend parked the car in front of
the international wing of the MMIA.
Eye witnesses, according to PUNCH, said the Air Force personnel removed the number plates of the car, having stayed longer than expected at the departure terminal area.
Shuaibu came later and pleaded with the Air Force personnel to return the car’s number plates to him.
Airport workers at the scene said Shuaibu, who was wearing a FAAN staff uniform, introduced himself to the military personnel with his staff identity card.
However, argument ensued and there was confrontation which made the Air Force men to start beating him until blood gushed freely out of his nostril. The FAAN official later collapsed and started losing breath
Another official of FAAN told reporters that Shuaibu was first taken to the FAAN clinic at the airport, but was later taken to the airport hospital. At press time, he was yet to regain consciousness.
“Shuaibu begged them and introduced himself as a FAAN staff, but they seemed not to care. By the time other people arrived the scene, Shuaibu had collapsed and blood was flowing from different parts of his body.
We first moved him to FAAN clinic, where they said his heart beat was slowing down and he was finding it difficult to breathe. So we have to rush him to the airport hospital.”
It will be recalled that about three months ago, a trolley operator at the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, of the Lagos airport died after sustaining grievous injuries from attacks by a naval rating.
The General Manager, Coporate Communications, FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati, could not be reached immediately for comments. He did not pick his calls nor respond to text a message sent by a Punch correspondent.
